The Benefits of PILATES: Why it works for me.

My Pilates Journey

My first encounter with Pilates was in 2009, during my high school days, at the school’s gym, which was packed with over twenty women, yoga mats, water bottles, and the instructor who collected 3eur before every class. I admired the pilates instructor for putting together an energizing, challenging, and balanced session elevated by the music of the early 2000s and finishing the class with 3 minutes of meditation lying down on our back on the mat with closed eyes while listening to a piece of very peaceful music (back then it was not so much called “mediation music”).

I loved the feeling of strength and calmness after every class. One day, I wondered, could I become a pilates instructor too?

15 years later, I have been on and off with a variety of sports, trying to find what works best for me. Pilates or sort of home pilates-based exercises were always a part of my life, but I never managed to get deeper to understand the philosophy behind the exercise and to polish my technique.

Why I Love Pilates

Back in 2022, I was intrigued by the reformer machine, and pilates studios in Copenhagen were popping up on Social Media and around the city, I decided to give it a try. Little did I know that this seemingly simple exercise on the Reformer machine would revolutionize my life.

Initially, I underestimated the challenge and the Pilates reformer session left me shaking and humbled. I realized the true power of this practice, which goes beyond mere physical strength.

Over the two years, Pilates has become an integral part of my life, whether home-based exercising or in the studio. Here are the top reasons why I’m so passionate about it:

Physical Therapy Benefits

  1. Inclusivity: Pilates is for everyone, regardless of age, fitness level, or physical limitations. I’ve exercised with students ranging from young athletes to elderly individuals with chronic conditions, and pregnant women, as Pilates is proven to be a beneficial tool for rehabilitation and improvement.
  2. Fearless Movement: Pilates empowers individuals to move with confidence, even after injuries or pain. It provides a safe and effective way to regain strength, flexibility, and mobility.
  3. Holistic Approach: Pilates targets the entire body, addressing imbalances and promoting optimal function. By focusing on core strength, posture, and alignment, Pilates can help prevent future injuries and chronic pain.

Personal Benefits

  1. Physical Transformation: Pilates has significantly improved my body composition, posture, and overall physical appearance. It has helped me achieve a lean, toned physique and maintain a healthy weight.
  2. Strength and Grace: Pilates combines strength training with flexibility and grace. It allows me to feel powerful and elegant at the same time.
  3. Enhanced Performance: Pilates has positively impacted my performance in other activities, such as weightlifting and running. It has improved my balance, coordination, and endurance.

The Power of Pilates

While Pilates is not a magic solution, it can be a powerful tool for physical and mental well-being. If you’re willing to commit to regular practice and listen to your body, you’ll start to see and feel the benefits.

So, whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a sedentary individual, I encourage you to give Pilates a try. You might just fall in love with it, too.
