How I Stay Healthy During Pregnancy: Pilates, Strength Training & Walking
Pregnancy has been one of the most beautiful and humbling experiences of my life. As a certified Pilates instructor, movement has always been a natural part of my daily routine. Before pregnancy, exercising wasn’t something I had to think about—it was simply part of who I am.
When I entered my first trimester, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. Would I feel nauseous? Completely exhausted? Would I lose all motivation to move?
I couldn’t predict how my body would respond, but I made one promise to myself:
No matter how I felt, I would do at least one thing each day to support my body through movement.
That promise has carried me through the most challenging days.
1. A 10-Minute Walk Was Always Enough
During the days when the fatigue was overwhelming, even getting off the sofa felt like a challenge. Instead of expecting myself to complete a full workout, I changed my definition of success.
If I managed to go outside for a slow 10-minute walk, I considered that a win.
Many of those walks were with my husband, who encouraged and supported me when I needed it most. We would simply walk at a comfortable pace, enjoy some fresh air, and remind ourselves that every small step mattered.
Those short walks often gave me more energy than I expected and always left me feeling mentally better.
2. Strength Training and Pilates When My Energy Allowed
On the days when I felt stronger, I followed a simple routine that helped me maintain both strength and mobility.
Twice a week, I focused on strength training with exercises such as:
- Squats
- Lunges
- Shoulder presses
- Tricep exercises
Maintaining full-body strength has been incredibly important throughout pregnancy, especially knowing how much the body changes over these months.
Two other days each week, I dedicated around 20 minutes to Pilates, focusing on mobility, posture, core awareness, and gentle stretching.
Rather than chasing intensity, my goal became consistency.
3. Movement Doesn’t Always Mean Exercise
There were also days when structured exercise simply wasn’t possible.
Instead of feeling guilty, I reminded myself that movement comes in many forms.
On those days, I would focus on everyday household activities:
- Washing the dishes
- Cleaning the kitchen
- Vacuuming the floors
- Wiping down surfaces
Even if it was only 10 or 15 minutes, completing these simple tasks made me feel physically accomplished and mentally stronger. It reminded me that caring for my home was also a way of caring for my body.
4. Pilates Breathing Became My Daily Reset
One practice that never left my routine was Pilates breathing.
Breath is at the heart of Pilates, and during pregnancy it has become even more valuable.
I inhale deeply through my nose, expanding my ribcage in every direction.
As I exhale through my mouth, I gently draw my ribs back toward the centre, engage my deep abdominal muscles, gently lift the pelvic floor, and imagine drawing my belly button softly toward my spine.
I repeat this for 10–15 slow, focused breaths, whether I’m sitting, standing, or simply taking a quiet moment during the day.
This practice helps me reconnect with my body, improve posture, activate my deep core muscles, and calm my mind. It’s amazing how something as simple as breathing with intention can make such a difference.
The Biggest Lesson I’ve Learned
Pregnancy has taught me that fitness isn’t about pushing harder.
It’s about listening to your body.
Some days your body asks for strength training. Some days it asks for a gentle walk. Other days, it simply asks you to rest while doing the small tasks that keep life moving.
Every one of those days is enough.
No matter how difficult my day has been, I haven’t allowed myself to believe that I couldn’t do one small thing to support my body. Sometimes that one thing was exercise. Sometimes it was breathing. Sometimes it was walking to the end of the street.
But it was always something.
And every small action has helped me stay positive, connected to my body, and grateful for everything it is doing to grow new life.
Nourishing My Body
Movement has only been one part of my pregnancy journey.
I’ve also focused on eating fresh, colourful, and nutrient-rich meals. As my baby has grown, I’ve naturally needed to eat smaller portions more frequently because of the pressure on my stomach, but I’ve continued to prioritise a varied and balanced diet that supports both my health and my baby’s development.
